Safe driving in Costa Rica is important to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Here are some guidelines and tips for safe driving in Costa Rica:

  1. Comply with traffic laws: Make sure you know and abide by all local traffic laws, including speed limits, traffic signs and traffic regulations. Fines for traffic infractions can be high.
  2. Seat belts: All vehicle occupants must wear seat belts at all times. This is an important rule and fines apply for non-compliance.
  3. Respect for pedestrians: Pay special attention to pedestrians, especially in urban areas and school zones. Crosswalks must be respected.
  4. Road conditions: Roads in Costa Rica can vary in quality, and some may be in poor condition. Drive with caution and adapt your speed to the road conditions. Also be aware that in the rainy season, roads can become slippery.
  5. Night driving: Avoid driving at night if possible, as some roads may lack lighting and driving conditions may be more dangerous.
  6. Driving in mountains: If you plan to drive in mountainous areas, be prepared for steep, winding roads. Use low gears when necessary and use caution when passing other vehicles on sharp curves.
  7. Road signs: Pay attention to road signs and road markings. Road signs may vary in design and color compared to other countries.
  8. Defensive driving: Practice defensive driving at all times. Do not take anything for granted and keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.
  9. Traffic conditions: Be prepared for heavy traffic in metropolitan areas, especially in San Jose. Plan your routes and travel times to avoid rush hours.
  10. Driving on the beach: Some beaches allow driving on the sand. If you decide to drive on the beach, make sure you do it safely and respect local rules.
  11. Documentation and insurance: Make sure you have all the necessary documents with you, such as your driver’s license, vehicle registration and valid insurance.

Remember: It is not allowed to cross rivers with vehicles.

Remember that traffic conditions and regulations may vary depending on the location in Costa Rica, so it is important to be informed and aware of the particularities of the region in which you are driving. Stay calm, be patient and enjoy the beautiful Costa Rican scenery while driving safely.
